Whoop & Hollar is having a busy week. The festival is entering its sixth season and released its biggest and most ambitious line-up yet on April 26.

Organizers say there will be more than a dozen acts featured on two stages including two musician workshops, something new for the August Folk Festival.

“This is a definite change from the festival’s inaugural year in 2013, when there were just three acts on the bill,” said Josh Wright a founding member.

“Every year, while still maintaining its intimate feel and grassroots charm, the festival grows its attendance and expands its activities. “This growth is largely attributed to dedicated volunteer efforts and a high level of community support and collaboration,” Linda Omichinski, another founding member said.

This summer, Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival will see a bigger and more diverse lineup than in the past five years. Scheduled to perform are Johnny Dietrich, Jada, Colton Nikkel, MacTague & MacAnallen, Lindsay Fialka, Brothers Zed, The Young Pixels, Turn a Phrase, High Gravity Stew Brew, Chris Messytone and Gareth Rice, Proper Operation, The Deeds, Dustin Harder’s Prairie Soul and Househand Shake.

“Whoop & Hollar’s mission to showcase diverse local talent is refected in the line up — 100 per cent of this year’s performers are based in Manitoba, particularly Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg,” Wright said. Festival goers can expect to hear anything from traditional Irish folk music to jazz to blues to indie rock.

A new afternoon workshop called “The Song Circle” will showcase singer/songwriters, and the signature evening workshop known as “High Gravity Stew Brew” will feature bands coming together to jam on stage, creating new music in the process. Harlequin Hangout, the festival’s second venue, is set in a quaint red barn and will showcase new and emerging performers.

The 2018 festival program will run from noon to midnight on Saturday, Aug. 25th, with free tent camping on Friday and Saturday night.
