Manitoba municipal elections are held every four years. The general Election Day is always the fourth Wednesday of October. October 24 is also the election of School Board Trustees. The City of Portage la Prairie and the Portage la Prairie School Board have decided to have a joint election and have appointed Diane Van Aert as the Senior Election Official for the City of Portage la Prairie.

Prospective municipal election candidates must register with the Senior Election Official (SEO) during the registration period before they may begin to accept contributions, incur expenses, fundraise or borrow money for their campaign.

Since May 1, the SEO has been accepting candidate registrations for mayor and on June 30 Van Aert will begin accepting registrations from those vying to fill the six municipal council positions.
