The Third Annual Garden Party and fundraiser for Sunset Palliative Care held July 22 may have received more than its fair share of rain, but there was some sunshine, too.

The day called for a 60 per cent chance of rain, but a 100 per cent chance of optimism to raise funds for the palliative care group didn’t allow the weather forecast to dampen events. Sunset Palliative Care is seeking to build a third compassionate room at the hospital. Approximately $1,000 was raised towards this goal.

Special thanks to Johnny Dietrich, Ken Wettlauffer, Colleen Bryce and Kathy Bryce for braving the elements while playing outside under the 400 plus-year-old oak tree. Thanks to Paul (Fireball) Shepherd, Terry Human and Tom Howe for anchoring the live music in the “Bistro” and to one of Portage la Prairie’s favourite summer magic makers; Gotta Have That Lemonade.

Don Pelachaty’s penchant for splashing colour around his yard made for an interesting visit for those who hadn’t yet had the opportunity.

Many were seen taking in the flora — especially the numerous lilies — that was in great shape thanks to some paid gardening, but also the result of some impossible hours by Chris Dumont who lives at the home.

Johnny Dietrich, Ken Wettlauffer, Colleen Bryce — who perform together as Kicking up Dust — will be entertaining this weekend at the Thresherman’s Reunion.
