Portage Celebrates Diversity festival Aug. 18

All are welcome to attend this third annual celebration of culture and diversity in Portage la Prairie.
Formerly known as the Newcomers’ Summer Festival, Portage Celebrates Diversity is a free fun-filled community festival where you can experience new cultures and meet new people, organizers say. It’s about coming together to learn, to understand, to share and to celebrate what it means to be human.
“We all possess unique identities and come from different backgrounds and life situations. At the same time, we are also fellow citizens of our shared community and world. We’re all welcome here in Portage la Prairie, and there is much to celebrate,” Portage Celebrates Diversity said in a press release.
Organized by Portage Learning and Literacy Centre (PLLC), the afternoon-long multicultural celebration offers cultural mini pavilions, music, art performances, food, artisans, interactive workshops, crafts, kids’ activities and games, conversation circles, a human library, and a community expo for newcomers.
In line with PLLC’s Newcomer Settlement Services program, the festival is geared toward providing an opportunity for newcomers to our community to gather for fun and celebrate summer, build connections within Portage and area, and learn more about local life and opportunities.
If you are an individual or group that identifies with a cultural or ethnic community and would like to share traditional food, games, sport, dance, music, or fashion as part of the event, please email josh@pllc.ca by Aug. 13, to book your booth. For more information or to volunteer, contact Wright via email, josh@pllc.ca
If you are a local business, organization, or service that would like to be part of the festival’s Community Expo for Newcomers, or a vendor looking to join the festival’s Local Market & Artisan Village, please email josh@pllc.ca by Aug. 13, to book your spot.

Portage Celebrates Diversity is scheduled for Aug. 18 from noon to 6 p.m., at Red River College.
