A third palliative care room at Portage District General Hospital is closer to being established thanks to a significant donation from a local couple.

Sunset Palliative Care received a $10,000 donation from Rusty and Elaine Rutherford to help launch a third palliative care room within the hospital.

“Through the overwhelming generosity of Rusty and Elaine Rutherford, our fundraising campaign has received a major contribution,” says Aldene Moroz, SPC coordinator. “Rusty and Elaine recognize the importance of the palliative care program, Sunset’s need for a third care room at the hospital and are extremely proud to make this donation.”

Sunset’s fundraising campaign was launched earlier this year when it received approval to refurbish a third room at the hospital for the much needed care of patients who are palliative.

Other major donations this year have included $5,000 from Portage Mutual Insurance, $4,000 from Stride Credit Union and $2,000 from the Oddfellows Bingo.

Since 2015, the palliative care organization, with significant support from Reg Tomalin and Arnold and Wendy Blight, has refurbished two rooms into palliative care at the hospital.

“We’re hoping others in the community will step up and help us get the third room completed,” says Moroz. “Any donation, big or small, will go a long way to achieving our target.”

Tax deductible donations can be made to Sunset Palliative Care by contacting Moroz at 204-857-3746. Cheques can be mailed to P.O. Box 92, Portage la Prairie MB, R1N 3B2.
