Just back from National Legion Convention in Winnipeg Aug. 25, some of the executive of the Portage la Prairie Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 are pumped and ready for Legion Week.
“One of the big pushes coming out of the convention is a focus on growing membership,” Legion President Bob Oldford said. “Legion Week is a great time to invite everyone in Portage to visit the Legion as our guest and to learn what we are all about.”
Many still believe only veterans can join the Legion and become involved in the community work the Legion undertakes.
“We want to serve the veteran, but we’re looking for people who are like-minded: people who want to honour our veterans, but also want to serve their community,” Oldford said. “Honouring our veterans is our duty. That’s not just for people from the legion, but for anybody in the community. We see that on Remembrance Day when we get 2,000 people in Stride Place.
On Dec. 6, the Legion will begin celebrating its 90th Anniversary. “I would like to see us sign in or reinstate members who haven’t been with us for a while. I would like to 90 for 90! 90 new members reinstated or new members into the Legion to celebrate our anniversary.”
At convention, Portage received special honours. “It was announced from the Dominion Stage we were recognized for our local efforts trying to reach into the community.”
Legion Week starts Sept. 15.
