Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris warned when he declared his intention to seek re-election, a flood of candidate announcements would quickly follow.

He was right, but the flood has so far only created a shallow pool to fish in to build the next council from.

Following Ferris’s late August announcement to let his name stand on the Oct. 24 municipal ballot, sitting councillors Brent Froese, Brent Budz, Melissa Draycott and Wayne Wall joined the campaign.

Coun. Ryan Espey declared his intent to run in mid-July and Coun. Liz Driedger said she will not stand for re-election.

As well, Kathrine Baer registered as a councillor candidate on Aug. 17 and Preston Meier on Aug. 31.

Sharilyn Knox is the latest citizen to declare an intent to run and registered on Sept. 4.

“Portage la Prairie has seen a lot of momentum in the last few years with regards to economic development. I want to get involved to help see it continue,” she said in making the announcement.
