“Older Persons” rights recognized

On October 1, each year The International Day of Older Persons as established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1990, is universally celebrated.

To honour the city’s local “Older Persons” Mayor Irvine Ferris, representing the City of Portage la Prairie, representatives from the Retired Teachers Association of Manitoba, Herman Prior Activity Centre (HPAC) founding member c and Chris Dumont, HPAC executive director took part in a proclamation ceremony to mark the day.

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 70 this year. The International Day of Older Persons is meant to draw attention to and promote fundamental freedoms and human rights for older persons.
