The “Jig is Up” annual Metis gala builds support for community

The Oct. 27 Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) Portage Local Gala is about so much more than comradery, a catered meal and dancing to Northern Reflections and other entertainers — it’s about supporting the Metis community here in building programs for seniors and kids.

“This is an important fundraiser for us,” says Sandra Sharpe, one of the gala organizers.

“The Portage (Metis) Local offers many programs throughout the year and this is one event we count on to help us fund them.”

The local organizes summer camps for kids and youths, activities for its member elderly with the far-reaching purpose of promoting Metis culture.

Our programming helps some of our members continue to be involved in the community and to learn about their culture,” said Sharpe. Fundraising the local undertakes also helps underwrite prescription medicine as organized by the MMF.

“There are so many things we try and do, and it all comes down to holding successful fundraisers like this gala,” she said.

One of the Sharpe Sisters — Kathy Bryce — is the master of ceremonies for the gala that is expected to attract upwards of 150 people for a sit-down roast beef dinner.

Well known country band Northern Reflections is the house band who will share the stage with Johnny Dietrich, Carolyn Whitfield, Charlie and Mavis Brennan, Richard Ducharme, Taylor Flemming, Tim Verway, Tom Howe, Mike Harris, Charlene Ducharme, Meagan Geir and Al Desjarlais.

“All these entertainers are well known here and all over. We are so lucky to bring these entertainers together for the gala. We have room to dance and we know it will be hard to stop people getting up to enjoy themselves,” said Sharpe.

The gala is being held at the Herman Prior Activity Centre. You can purchase for dinner and show for $35 or come just for the show with a $20 ticket. The catered dinner is at 5 p.m. with showtime scheduled for 7 p.m. Festivities will continue until 11 p.m.

“Local businesses are always generous and we have a nice selection of silent auction items.”

Tickets are available at the Herman Prior Activity Centre or from Sandra Sharpe 204-857-9335.
