MP says Liberals failing on Chinese canola decision

Conservative House Leader and Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen has raised concerns about what steps the Liberal government is taking to address China’s decision to halt canola shipments

Morden, MB – Conservative House Leader and Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen has raised concerns about what steps the Liberal government is taking to address China’s decision to halt canola shipments by Richardson International.

“Southern Manitoba is a major producer of canola. This action has serious concerns for this region,” Bergen said. “Blocking trade in Canada’s top export commodity without grounds for doing so is concerning, and has serious consequences for Canadians and Canadian jobs.”

“Canadian farmers feed not only our country but the entire world. First India blocked Canadian peas and lentils, followed by Italy blocking Canadian durum wheat and now China is halting canola shipments,” said Bergen.  “When is this going to stop? The Prime Minister has a personal responsibility to take action and resolve this dispute with China so that Canadians do not suffer the consequences.”
