IIU investigating after man dies in officer-involved shooting on Long Plain First Nation

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a 23-year-old male

following an officer-involved shooting on Long Plain First Nation yesterday evening.

Manitoba First Nations Police notified the IIU that officers had responded around 6 p.m. to a

report of a male armed with a firearm in a residence. According to the notification, a

confrontation took place between the man and police, resulting in one or more officers

discharging their firearms and striking the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A team of IIU investigators was immediately deployed to the scene and the investigation

commenced.

Since this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba

Police Commission.
