Depending on public health orders at the time, Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival will carry on and adapt its programming accordingly
For the second straight year amid pandemic restrictions and lockdowns, the Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival is planning for a live event this summer—”a weekend of top-notch music Portagers can look forward to,” organizers promise.
Festival organizers have confirmed its 2021 dates for Aug. 27-28 and say it will be proceeding in a format that takes into effect all provincial public health orders at the time.
“Multiple contingency plans are in place to ensure the health and safety of everyone in attendance,” explains Festival Co-organizer and Artistic Director, Josh Wright. “If public outdoor gatherings are permitted by the summer, this year’s Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival will be a drive-in event with physically distanced pods and cohorts like last summer. If not, the artists will still perform on stage and the show will be live-streamed to their fans.”
In either scenario, the 2021 festival will be live-streamed to remain accessible to the public and expand the organization’s outreach in a new era of hybrid entertainment events, or, ones that combine both live and virtual elements. The event will once again be held at the Portage Exhibition grounds on Island Park.
“Through the assistance of a recent $10,300 grant provided to our organization by our major funder, the Dept. of Canadian Heritage’s ‘Building Communities Through Arts & Heritage Program’, performing artists from across Manitoba will be guaranteed a live paid gig at the festival,” adds Wright. “We are always proud to support our local musicians, our number one priority.”
