Kayla Luky/Southern Flavor to open summer concert series

Thursday night live music in the park continues this Thursday as the free Concerts in the Park concert series kicks off with some Manitoba country and bluegrass favourites.

Concerts in the Park will start at 6 p.m. on Thursday on the Ukrainian stage.

Kayla Luky

Singer-songwriter Kayla Luky lives in Grandview, Manitoba, a small farming community nestled between the Riding and Duck Mountains. This unique setting gives her country sound absolute authenticity.

Luky has played shows all over Manitoba and toured Western and Eastern Canada a few times over, along with such events as Canadian Country Music Week, Break Out West, Folk Alliance International, Folk Music Ontario, Canadian Music Week, North by Northeast, Dauphin’s Countryfest and many folk festivals.

After much positive response to Kayla Luky’s last albums The Time It Takes (2011) and Kayla & Ben (2013) she decided to further cultivate her music by working with award winning producer Murray Pulver (Doc Walker, Steve Bell, Bros Landreth.) The end result is Back To Dirt (2017) featuring twelve new tracks soaked in alcohol, dirt and sorrow, honouring the roots of real country music.

Southern Flavor

Southern Flavor: Tim and Doris Verwey. SUPPLIED

Southern Flavor takes its name from an instrumental tune by the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe. The group plays tunes borrowed from bands of the earlier days of Bluegrass and Country music.

Singers Tim and Doris Verwey live in St. Francois Xavier and lean toward older country/bluegrass songs. They prefer songs that tell a story and include two- and three-part harmonies. They like the songs of Bill Monroe, of course, as well as Ricky Skaggs, Larry Sparks, James King, Ernest Tubb and Allison Krause just to name a few.

Tim and Doris share the spotlight on lead vocals and harmony singing. Tim also plays mandolin and occasionally switches to guitar. Jim Hildred of Winnipeg is the guitarist for the group as well as providing baritone harmony vocals. Duncan Stewart is from St. Andrews MB and rounds out the group on upright bass.

Listeners will undoubtedly hear the distinct Southern Flavor in the music of this group.
