The rain came down in buckets at one point causing many to flee for cover, but celebrating Canada’s 151 birthday July 1 at Stride Place was still enjoyed and appreciated by many.

Robert A. Oldford, standing, President of the Portage la Prairie Legion and Robert F. Oldford, 12, a cadet, spent time Canada Day honouring Portage la Prairie veterans buried at Hillside Cemetary by placing a poppy on their graves. Annually the Legion and the cadets visit the cemetery early on Canada Day to commemorate the efforts of local veterans.

- First Nations dancers are always part of the Main Stage entertainment during Portage la Prairie Canada Day celebrations.
- The Big Brothers Big Sisters Duck Race fundraiser has become a Canada Tradition. Last minute tickets were available for sale leading up to the evening race. The group expects to realize about $6,000 from the fundraiser.
