Central Plains RCMP seize tobacco in routine traffic stop

87,260 cigarettes were seized and two people arrested as a result of a routine traffic stop on Oct. 24.

Police report just after 9 a.m. on October 24, RCMP conducted a traffic stop of a rental vehicle from Alberta near Portage la Prairie. It was determined that the driver had an outstanding arrest warrant from Ontario. The 42-year-old female from Calgary was placed under arrest for that warrant.

The officer’s observations of items inside the vehicle provided grounds to arrest the 54-year-old male passenger from Calgary as well. The officer located unstamped tobacco products inside large blue totes. In total, 87,260 cigarettes were seized.

Both the driver and passenger were held for court in Winnipeg.
