McCain Foods, Smart Electric, Mid-Plains Implements in partnership with the Carberry Fair Potato Truck Pull, have teamed together to host a Free Fry Day community event to raise funds for the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation while simultaneously supporting Canadian potato farmers on Friday, June 19, as nearly 7,500 bags of French-fry potato products, supplied by McCain Foods, will be given away at locations in Portage la Prairie, Winkler, Carman and Carberry.

French Fries Feed Farmers

The ripple effects of this spring’s COVID-19 outbreak are being felt throughout the agricultural economy. Because of mass restaurant closures, and an abrupt drop in demand, there is a potato surplus.

“With Manitoba potato farmers impacted by the shutdown of the foodservice & hospitality sectors and the recent news about the cancellation of the Carberry Potato Truck Pull, we felt there was an opportunity to rally the ag community and the general public around both of these causes,” said Eric Durand, Plant Manager from McCain Foods Carberry. “It’s important that we come together to help the farmers who’ve given us so much. That’s why we’re pleased to be working collaboratively with our partners on this important initiative for Manitobans to rally behind. We will be there for our communities throughout this crisis because we are all in this together and committing to eating more fries is a small act that can have a big impact on Canadian potato farmers.”

Funds raised on June 19 will be donated to support CancerCare’s internationally recognized team of health professionals who provide outstanding care for patients and their families.

To participate in the Free Fry Day giveaway, in Portage la Prairie stop by Stride Place between 2:30 – 4 p.m. Each vehicle will receive two bags of McCain French fry potato products (4.5 Lbs. McCain Dipn’ Wedges and 3.5 Lbs. Potato Patties) through curbside contactless pickup. Full event details and distribution times can be found on the event page.
