A Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was stabbed on Dec. 26 while trying to arrest a woman on Wilkinson Cres.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., Dec. 26 Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence located on Wilkinson Cres. The responding officer located a 40-year-old female walking on Crescent Rd. E.
Police say the officer approached the woman who was not dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Police also report the woman may have been under the influence of drugs and attempted to learn if she needed assistance. “The female was not able to properly respond to questions asked of her or identify herself to him. As she attempted to flee, she stumbled and fell to the ground,” police said in a press release.
“The female was placed under arrest but resisted as the officer attempted to gain control of her. During the arrest, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his right thigh and realized he had been stabbed. The officer was able to gain control of the female and during the search, located a capped needle and a large homemade knife which had been tucked into her waistband,” the press release said.
Other officers arrived on the scene to help and took the female into custody. The stabbed officer drove himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.
The female remains in police custody. She faces charges of assaulting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. Police did not identify the woman or if she is a Portage la Prairie resident.
Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
