Manitoba RCMP has identified the body of a homicide victim found in Portage la Prairie and has moved its investigation to Winnipeg.
On June 24, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Manitoba RCMP responded to a report of found human remains near Baker St. in Portage la Prairie. Investigators with Major Crime Services and Forensic Identification Services attended the scene and worked with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine that it was a homicide.
The victim is Gerhard Reimer-Wiebe, a 27-year-old male from Steinbach who was living in Winnipeg. Gerhard, who also goes by the name George, was known to frequent homeless shelters within the city.
Major Crime Services investigators have now identified a location of interest on Alfred Avenue in Winnipeg that may be linked to this homicide. The residence of interest was reported to be on fire on June 20, 2020, and was subsequently demolished for safety reasons.
The murder investigation will be centred on Alfred Ave. throughout the next three days in an effort to further the investigation.
On Friday, July 10, a description of the victim and a plea for information about his identity was released. Another plea for information as to the identity of the victim was made on July 15.
As a direct result of this second plea, information was received that enabled investigators to confirm the identity of the victim.
The investigation is ongoing.
The RCMP is releasing his image in the hopes that someone recognizes him and can provide important information on his activities between May 15 and June 20, 2020.
